What are some claims examples for nail salons?
As a salon owner, your clients rely on you to provide great and safe service. But with lots of nail clipping/filing, strong dyes, and heating equipment, comes the risk of injuries. If customers get injured on your premises, you can be held liable for personal injury, even if you weren’t directly responsible for causing the injury. Also, nail salon staff are at high risk of contracting Covid-19 infections due to close working conditions with clients.
Claim Example 1: Nail salon catches fire
An electrical outlet in your nail salon malfunctions, causing a fire in your premises. The fire grows rapidly. Automatic sprinkler systems are unable to contain the fire. Your shop is burnt to the ground. If you have Commercial Property Insurance, the insurer would pay to restore your nail salon to its original condition. Your policy can cover the cost of renovations, fixtures and fittings, barbering equipment, barbering supplies, and more. Given that the bulk of your investment in starting a barbershop is in the physical premises, it’s vital that you carry Commercial Property coverage.
Claim Example 2: Nail technicians and other employees get infected with Covid-19
Covid-19 infections are a serious risk for nail salon businesses. Your employees will spend long hours in close contact with a large number of customers, and you have no idea where your clients have been.
Let’s take a look an example of how Nail Salon Insurance would protect you, in case your workers contract Covid-19. Let’s say you employ 4 nail technicians. One of your staff gets infected with Covid-19. Since you work closely together in a shop, your infected employee spreads the virus to your entire company. All 4 of your staff get 2 weeks of medical leave. Since these are work-related infections, Singapore law requires you to compensate your employees for their i) medical bills, and ii) salary while on MC. The monthly salary of each of your nail technicians is $3,000. Let’s do a quick calculation of how much you have to compensate your employees for.
Lost wages for 2 weeks of medical leave: $1,500 per nail technician
Number of nail technicians on medical leave: 4
Total lost wages that you must pay to your nail technicians, by law: $1,500 x 4 = $6,000
With WICA Insurance, these expenses are covered for you. The insurance company will pay the $6,000 for the employee’s lost wages, and also pay their medical expenses stemming from their work-related Covid-19 infection.
Nail salon employees are also prone to suffering physical injuries like cuts or burns at work. WICA Insurance would cover these costs as well.
Claim Example 3: Customer slips and falls in your shopA customer walks into your nail salon while the floor is wet. He slips and hits hits his head, suffering a large wound. He calls an ambulance to get him to the hospital. 2 weeks later, he files a personal injury lawsuit against you, claiming your negligence caused him to suffer his injury. He sues you for $15,000, seeking compensation for his medical expenses. If you have Public Liability Insurance, the insurer would step in to defend you. Your Public Liability policy would pay for lawyer’s fees to protect you from the lawsuit, and also pay for the damages being claimed against you.
How much coverage do I need for my nail salon?
Work Injury Compensation Insurance: You should insure 100% of your employees. Under WICA regulations, MOM requires business owners to insure their manual employees. Examples of manual workers include manicurists/pedicurists, nail technicians, beauty therapists, massage therapists, cleaners, etc. WICA regulations also requires you to insure any worker who earns $2,600/month or less.
Public Liability Insurance: Consider a minimum of $500,000 coverage.
Commercial Property Insurance: Consider at least $100,000 coverage.
Business Interruption Insurance: Consider at least $50,000 coverage.
Foreign Worker Medical Insurance: Singapore law requires employers to insure each foreign worker with Foreign Worker Medical Insurance. If your foreign worker is also a manual employee (e.g. a manicurist/pedicurist), then you must purchase both Work Injury Compensation Insurance and Foreign Worker Medical Insurance.
